Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem Imamoglu carried out the first test drive on Mecidiyekoy - Mahmutbey Stage, which is the first stage of the Kabatas - Mecidiyekoy - Mahmutbey Metro Line. Mayor Imamoglu announced that the first stage of the line would be operational on 19th May.

Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), Ekrem Imamoglu, carried out the first test drive on Sunday, 16th February, on Mecidiyekoy - Mahmutbey Stage, which is the first stage of M7 Kabatas - Mecidiyekoy - Mahmutbey Metro Line.

Pedestrian lane is put into use...
Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu commissioned Mecidiyekoy BRT (Metrobus) Line Pedestrian Connection, which has been taken out of use due to the construction of the line in question. Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, top management of IMM and Consul General of France, Bertnard Buchwalter took a journey on M7 Test Train, which is designed as UTO (Unattended Train Operation) from Mecidiyekoy Station to Tekstilkent Station where the line's control centre is located and the journey took 30 minutes. Mayor Imamoglu inspected the control centre and shared some technical information about the line and the projects to be added in the future.

“It will ease the burden of Istanbul”
Mayor Imamoglu announced that Mecidiyeköy - Mahmutbey Stage, which is the first stage of the M7 Line, will be activated on 19th May and said that the line will ease a heavy proportion of congestion of Istanbul traffic, especially BRT (Metrobus). Mayor Imamoglu also stated that they are working intensively on Eminonu - Alibeykoy line and continued his speech.

“Eminonu - Alibeykoy line will be completed by the end of 2020”
“Eminonu-Alibeykoy line is one of the projects that is about to finish and we put in such an intense effort for this project to complete towards the last quarter of 2020. These projects were at a stationary, standing point when we arrived. We came here and saw the state of this place 5-6 months ago. We had friends attending. I remember it was the end of July. We care a lot. We do situation assessment about our metro lines once or twice a week and we review our agenda. If I am to give you an example, I am very sad about the status of Bostanci-Dudullu line. Because this project is a complex project that has a parking lot of 1000 vehicles next to E5 highway. It is such a transfer centre that also offers various other opportunities for transportation because it is located in such a great position that also connects with the sea line. It is now being included in the investment plan and it is an opportunity that paves the way for us to find funding source. We put such an importance on this project as IMM and we focus on commissioning it as soon as possible. This is such a functional and valuable line that brings people together, connects business areas; has stops overlapping the E-5, going down to Bostanci and the seaside passing through the minibus line. It was important for us to include this project in the investment plan where we already commissioned other three lines, which are Goztepe and Umraniye line, Sultanbeyli-Cekmekoy line, and Tuzla-Pendik lines and connecting them to Sabiha Gokcen Airport on one hand with Tuzla-Pendik line makes these lines important lines. Through these projects, we are planning to have our lines on our Anatolian side to be operational. All these projects are preparing us to reach a potential of 600 kilometres in our city by 2024, with the lines constructed by Ministry of Transport. There are parts of these mentioned lines that are going to be operational by 2020 and 21. These projects are at utmost importance and they are very valuable. We are excited. We really look forward in introducing many metro projects to our citizens as soon as possible and we put such an intense effort in this. Our new projects will be their extensions. As you said, the west part of Istanbul is a bit of a victim in this sense. Especially our line, which passes through Basaksehir and meets Bahcesehir-Esenyurt section after Mahmutbey then reaches to Beylikduzu that is being waited for about 17 years. With the part of Beylikduzu metro that connects to Sefakoy, we continue our intensive work on project design and financing of this metro. I even got a briefing about it this week. I hope that we will announce the tender to our citizens as soon as possible. ”

The impact of Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey line on traffic
Reminding that the transportation between Mecidiyekoy and Mahmutbey reaches up to 1.5 hours during peak hours, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that this time would decrease down to 30 minutes with the commissioning of this metro line:

“We are talking about 15 stations and 1 million passengers a day. This is a line with very high carrying capacity. Later, when Mahmutbey-Esenyurt line is operational, it will also be suitable for 8-vehicle operation. Not only will it be a Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey line, but it will also include the carriages that include Kabatas in Besiktas and stretch to Esenyurt. The system in our control room, which you just saw, will turn into a project that encompasses this system and has the capacity and potential to manage those systems as it ends in time. ”

First Unattended Metro Line of the European Side…
Mecidiyekoy - Mahmutbey line, which is the first stage of the line designed between Kabatas and Esenyurt as the first fully automated and unattended metro line of the European Side, will be the metro line with the highest passenger capacity in our country. Kabatas section of the line is also tendered as the second stage and the section between Mahmutbey and Esenyurt is tendered as the third stage. The line is 18-kilometer-long and has the capacity to carry 86,400 passengers in 28 minutes in one direction.

Integration with the existing transportation modes and lines upon the complete recommissioning of this stage of the line and these are shown below:

M2 Yenikapi-Haciosman Metro Line and BRT (Metrobus) service at Mecidiyekoy Station.
T5 Eminonu-Alibeykoy Tram Line at Alibeykoy Station.
T4 Topkapi-Mescid-i Selam Tram Line at Karadeniz Mahallesi Station.
M3 Kirazlı-Olimpiyat-Basaksehir Metro Line at Mahmutbey Station.
