Rail systems are one of the low-emission types of transportation modes. Metro Istanbul is aware of the necessity of rail systems for sustainable urban life. Today, we are feeling the effects of climate change seriously; Metro Istanbul aims to carry the city to the future by acting together with its residents, as one of the most environmentally sensitive transportation modes. In line with the goal of being the most preferred vehicle, which is emphasised in Metro Istanbul’s vision, Metro Istanbul emphasises that using low-emission transportation modes is at the forefront of sustainable urban mobility for sustainable cities. Metro Istanbul works hard to raise awareness in order to reduce fossil fuel consumption in urban transportation in order to offer a more liveable city and higher quality living space for future generations.

Metro Istanbul is aware of the integration with other transportation modes for sustainable urban transportation. For example, encouraging the use of bicycles is at the forefront of efforts to integrate metro lines with other transportation modes with an intermodal approach. Metro Istanbul implemented the following practices in this direction.

• Metro Istanbul, which has been working for a long time to support the use of bicycles in order to encourage a healthier and zero-emission life, has started a pilot scheme for bicycle parking in its metro stations.
• Five parking areas, each with a capacity of 2 bicycles, were installed at Altunizade station of M5 Uskudar-Cekmekoy Metro Line.
• With the practice that started in September 2020, the last cars were turned into bicycle-friendly cars.
• In line with the vision of being the most preferred vehicle, the “park and go” pilot scheme commenced on September 10th, 2021 in order to encourage Istanbul residents who use private vehicles to use public transportation as well.
