Internet is coming to Istanbul's metros!

Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), gave the good news to Istanbulites that internet can be used in metros. The decision, which was passed by the IMM Assembly Commission on June 16th, will begin to be implemented as soon as possible.

The practice of GSM and internet connection interruption in metros, which started in 2005 with security concerns around the world, continued in Turkey while it was abolished all over the world. Internet is one of the basic needs of our age. Especially during the pandemic period, this need has increased after practices such as distant education and working from home.

According to TUIK data, the rate of internet usage among individuals aged 16 to 74 in Turkey in 2020 increased by 3.7 points compared to the previous year and reached 79%. According to the results of the 2020 Passenger Satisfaction Survey of Metro Istanbul, Turkey's largest urban rail system operator with a daily passenger capacity of over 3 million, 86% of passengers want free use of the internet in metros.
