Historical Collaboration on tourism between Metro İstanbul and TÜRSAB!

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality subsidiary, Metro Istanbul, and the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) have collaborated on a significant project for Istanbul tourism. They have facilitated easy access for cruise ship tourists arriving in Istanbul to reach the city's attractions.

Metro Istanbul, one of the affiliate companies of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), is starting a project with TÜRSAB (Association of Turkish Travel Agencies) that will add value to Istanbul's cruise tourism and ease urban transportation. The "Galataport-Beyazit Touristic Tram", which will carry the tourists who come to Istanbul Galataport by cruise ships and who have difficulty in reaching the Historic Peninsula due to heavy traffic, is coming to life. Signatures for the project were signed at a ceremony attended by Metro Istanbul General Manager Özgür Soy and TÜRSAB President Firuz B. Bağlıkaya.

“A project that creates great value”

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Özgür Soy, General Manager of Metro Istanbul, said, “The project we signed today was a project that created great value in terms of cost-benefit by spending the public's resources at a minimum stage. It has been an issue that has been talked about for years that cruise tourism, which has great benefits for the country, the city and tourism, should be further developed in Istanbul, and we are doing it today. It is extremely important for tourists to reach the Historic Peninsula and visit the most valuable, historical and touristic places of Istanbul”.

“The comfort of our passengers will not be affected”

Stating that the project will be realized by using T1 Kabataş-Bağcılar Tram Line, General Manager Soy said, “We will provide a special service to cruise passengers using our existing line between 09.00 and 16.00 when the line is not that busy with regular passengers, so that the comfort of other passengers will not be affected. We will transport tourists from Galataport region to Sultanahmet and Beyazıt in 17 minutes, much faster than road transportation, regardless of traffic.”
Sharing the information that tram tickets will be sold by TÜRSAB member agencies through the interface developed by TÜRSAB and Metro Istanbul, General Manager Soy added that the line will become operational in 2023.

Bağlıkaya: Tourists will save time

Speaking at the signing ceremony held at TÜRSAB Headquarters, TÜRSAB President Firuz B. Bağlıkaya stated that they signed a project that would solve the problem without adding additional burden to Istanbul traffic:
“As in all big cities, there is a very serious traffic density in the Historic Peninsula in normal operation… It was a situation like visiting historical places in a hurry. Within the framework of this project developed with Metro Istanbul, only tourists will use the tram that will depart from the port and go to the Historic Peninsula. The tram, which will be operated by Metro Istanbul, will have a special stop at the cruise port and will bring tourists to and from the Historic Peninsula. Therefore, according to our calculations, tourists will gain more than an hour. On the other hand, with this project, we have taken a step that will protect the historical heritage in the region.”
