Heroes carry heroes…

Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem Imamoglu visited metro and tram drivers who continued to work in these difficult days. Mayor Imamoglu said, “We are trying to provide transportation services. The transportation service has heroes and you are those heroes”.
Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Ekrem Imamoglu started moral visits to the personnel of public institutions who have to work during the coronavirus epidemic, which has influenced our country as well as the world. Mayor Imamoglu paid his first visit to the train drivers at Topkapi compound of T4 Topkapi – Mescid-i Selam Tram Line within the scope of his moral visits.

“We have no friends in critical condition”
Metro Istanbul General Manager Ozgur Soy delivered the first speech at the meeting held in accordance with the social distance rules. General Manager Soy said, “These are our colleagues who applaud their health workers every day and bring them home and work. We always applaud them. We continue in difficulty. Unfortunately, we had some of our colleagues who fell sick recently and we had some of our colleagues who are in quarantine. Thank God, we do not have a colleague who is in critical condition. We expect those who have recovered to join us again. We are experiencing such a difficult process. We will survive with your support”.

“We are witnesses of history…”
Mayor Imamoglu started his speech after General Manager Soy, stated that he is happy to be together with the employees, and emphasised that our country and our world is going through a historical process. Mayor Imamoglu said, “This is a pandemic process in which the whole world feels each other for the first time. In a way, we are witnesses of history. Another kind of feeling to feel responsibility occurs in people who experience such periods. There is also an obligation to prepare for the next period. In this sense, I am one of those who think that the rules will be rewritten, the world will step into a new order and that we all have responsibility at this point. This process does not have a simple reading in my mind. When I speak to administrators in cities like us from different parts of the world, I hear similar feelings from them”. 

“You are the heroes of transportation…”
Underlining that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is trying to provide transportation services while going through difficult conditions as a country, Mayor Imamoglu said, “There are heroes of transportation service; you are the ones. Duty is done in difficult conditions. How long will our people stay healthy? How long can this service be maintained? We are responsible for all these planning, calculations and backups. This is not a simple matter. While continuing to provide service, I pray for good health for all of you. May God bless and protect all of you and your families”.

“The number of passengers increased in a week…”
Reminding that everyone from different professions made a great effort to carry out the process in a healthy way, Mayor Imamoglu stated that Istanbul should be isolated in order to protect the people of the city and said, “I am not saying this. When I said it on the first day, I spoke to scientists by reading scientific reports and I have been expressing this since 24th March. No one wants to say, do not go out on the streets, but the situation we are in requires it. Last week we carried 890 thousand people on Monday, yesterday we carried 1 million 110 thousand people according to our reports. It increased when it should decrease. Is it not a pity for people who have contributed to this effort? According to some data, it was determined that 2, 5 million people are mobile according to mobile phone movements. When you look at it, it is % 15 percent, but 2, 5”.

“Hard times but we will overcome…”
Mayor Imamoglu thanked the train drivers for their efforts in this process and underlined that they are grateful to them. Emphasising those employees should not disrupt the hygiene rules at home, Mayor Imamoglu continued:

"These are tough times. However, we will overcome. We will prepare for the new period; the form of management will change. The employee needs to change; the administrators have to change. You are going to witness that our children who lived in these days will write and talk differently. They will perceive it with another concept. They will not forget why they were trapped inside the house for a month or two or three months and the reasons why they were trapped inside their houses”.
