Hazards in Metro Projects Being Eliminated

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues its work on metro projects that have been halted due to financial reasons. Assoc. Prof. Pelin Alpkökin, Head of the IMM’s Rail Systems Department, has explained that their aim is to ensure the security of potentially risky projects, and put them into effect immediately afterwards.

Since July, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is continuing its work on incomplete projects that were put out to tender in 2017, and halted later on due to financial difficulties. The works on the Başakşehir-Kayaşehir Metro Line have been accelerated upon the instruction of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu to locate the hazardous tunnel constructions in projects which were either slowed down or completely halted.

Assoc. Prof. Pelin Alpkökin, Head of the IMM’s Rail Systems Department, has done a site inspection of a study that was started in September, and said: “As this exact spot happens to be located underneath a residential area, we will eliminate the hazard here by completing the tunnels and using permanent coating. We want to accelerate this project as soon as possible by securing the risky spots in the tunnel and on the surface.”

WORKS AT BAŞAKŞEHİR CITY HOSPITAL GAIN MOMENTUM
Assoc. Prof. Alpkökin inspected the project and found out that although it had been started in April. 2017, only 5% of the 6.2-kilometer-long line was completed. Speaking on the matter, Alpkökin said: “We have sped up the basic construction of the station there, in a way that will not hinder the opening of the Başakşehir City Hospital. We want to complete the construction of the City Hospital Station swiftly.”

After sharing information on the works that they have started at the Shaft 1 section of the Başakşehir-Kayaşehir Metro Line, Alpkökin spoke about the halted projects: “The works came to a stop in June 2018. Even though the ground structure is good, we restarted the work here in September as there is a densely populated residential area above the tunnel. The same work is going on in two other tunnels at the Kirazlı-Halkalı line. We are planning to finish the coating works by April 2020. We want to share good news with the people of Istanbul as we did when we restarted the Ataşehir-Göztepe Metro Line project.”
