First Women Station Supervisors Took Office In Metro Istanbul

The new station supervisors of Metro Istanbul, one of the affiliates of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), started to work. For the first time in the 33-year history of the company, 13 women are among the station supervisors who have successfully completed their training and started their duties.

Turkey's largest urban rail system operator, Metro Istanbul, continues to grow and create job opportunities with its newly commissioned lines, despite the ongoing pandemic in our country as well as the whole world. The station supervisors, who successfully completed their training, started to work in Metro Istanbul, which employs approximately 5 thousand people, including security and cleaning staff.

A first in the company's 33-year history
Recruitment of women station supervisors is a first in the 33-year history of the company. Recruitment process started after the technical and theoretical trainings that lasted for 2 months, Metro Istanbul General Manager Ozgur Soy said, “After the trainings that started in February, 13 of our friends who were successful in the exam have started their duties as our first women station supervisors in our 33-year company history. We have 268 Station Supervisors on duty today, and 255 of these colleagues are men and 13 of them are women".

Reminding that rail systems are a male-dominated sector worldwide, General Manager Soy said, “We set out to create a family atmosphere that prioritises women and prioritises merit and career development. Until the badge ceremony held in August 2019 with the participation of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, we had only 8 women drivers. Our women employment rate was around 8%. In 2020, 92% of our recruitments are women. We included 88 female train drivers in our team at the badge ceremony we held in September 2020. We increased the proportion of women in our total number of employees to 9.44%. We aim to increase this rate to 15% at first and then much higher figures. In our Metro Istanbul family, we see every day that women can do every job in every field with great success. Women working in jobs that are presented as men's jobs make our young people say, "Why not, I can do it too" by giving inspiration and encouragement to other women. We can observe this from the stories they tell in the interviews we have with the female train drivers who applied to our company”.

“It is important that our station managers provide the best experience to our passengers”
Explaining the importance of station supervisors for the company, Ozgur Soy, General Manager of Metro Istanbul, said, “We are a company that sees its passengers as guests, not customers. It is our debt to Istanbulites to welcome them in the best way and with a smiling face. Our station supervisors are our faces that represent us in front of our passengers at the field, so it is essential to provide the best experience by communicating well with our passengers. For example; Even if our candidates are successful in other subjects during the recruitment process, candidates who do not have sufficient communication skills do not have a chance to pass the exam”.

Stating that in crisis situations such as equipment failure, theft, service failure and natural disaster, station supervisors take the first step, General Manager Ozgur Soy said, “Our station supervisors are responsible not only for our passengers but also for a very large area. For this reason, a very challenging and comprehensive training process awaits our colleagues who will get to this position”.

“They are Subject to hands-on tests like repairing a malfunctioning escalator”
General Manager Ozgur Soy, who informed that the candidates went through a technical and theoretical training process that lasted for 2 months together with the orientation process, said, “Each of our candidates goes through an extremely extensive training process, including subjects such as crisis management, team management, leadership, first aid and communication. At the end of these trainings, some of which are practical, we also conduct both written and practical exams. For example, we measure the success of our candidates in cases of repairing a malfunctioning escalator or elevator, or applying first aid to a passenger who fainted at the station. Because in such cases, it is our station supervisors who make the first intervention at the field and coordinate the team”.
