Two Cities, One METRO !

Baku's metro business, Baku Metropolitan, celebrated the 55th anniversary of its establishment. Speaking at the event, Metro Istanbul General Manager Özgür Soy emphasized the friendship and cooperation between the two institutions and said, "We are one metro in two cities".

The metro operation of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku Metropolitan, celebrated the 55th anniversary of its establishment. Özgür Soy, General Manager of Metro Istanbul, also attended the celebration ceremony held in Baku.

Congratulating his Azerbaijani colleagues on the occasion of the anniversary in his speech at the event, General Manager Özgür Soy underlined the importance of expanding business relations with the Baku metro in recent years and the importance of mutual effective cooperation between the metros of sister countries and said, “When Azerbaijan declared its independence in 1918, the Ottoman State was the first to recognize it. When it broke away from the Soviet Union in 1991 and declared its independence again, we were proud to be the first country to recognize it as the Republic of Turkey. Mr. President Ilham Aliyev's words "Where Turkey is, Azerbaijan is there" are the summary of our friendship and brotherhood. We reinforce our friendship with the collaborations we have developed. As in many areas, we are advancing together in the development journey of railways. As two sister institutions, we know that this cooperation will lead to very good projects and we feel the excitement of this. Baku metro, the first metro established in the Muslim and Turkish world, is celebrating its 55th anniversary today. I would like you to know that we are very happy and proud that you have seen us as a member from your family and invited to such an important celebration”.

“We are with you whenever you need”

Stating that as Metro Istanbul, they stand by the Baku metro whenever they need it with all their technology, products, knowledge and experience, General Manager Özgür Soy said, “We are very happy to share our experiences and join forces. Seeing the Baku Metro grow and expand with new investments; Being with you on this journey and knowing that you are with us gives us strength. Inspired by the saying of our esteemed leader and elder, the late Heydar Aliyev, "One nation, two states", I would like to say this: "We are one metro in two cities".

Cooperation between the 2 metro started in 2021

In 2021, the first meetings were held between Metro Istanbul and Baku Metropolitan on cooperation and technology sharing on signalling and R&D developed by Metro Istanbul. As a result of the negotiations, Metro Istanbul started to provide operational management for the Baku metro on the control centre and station services, training consultancy on electromechanics, signalization, operation and railway construction within the Metro Academy, and consultancy services on vehicle and workshop equipment. Metro Istanbul also shared information with the Baku metro on documents such as the Emergency Action Plan and the Operating Rules Manual. Negotiations continue between the two metro companies on new collaborations.
