Accessible Metro Suggestions Collected From Disabled Citizens

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) organised a technical trip to Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro Line together with disabled citizens. The line is planned to be recommissioned very soon. A group of 20 people with disabilities accompanied the authorities on the trip and examined the metro line for accessibility and independent use. The trip between Kazim Karabekir and Kagithane stations ended with an evaluation meeting. The notes of the meeting will be turned into a booklet in order to set an example for future projects.

IMM examined M7 Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro Line with the disabled citizens before the official opening. M7 Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro Line is planned to be recommissioned in a few months. Head of Rail Systems Department Assoc. Dr. Pelin Alpkokin, IMM Rail System Projects Manager Serap Timur, IMM European Region Rail System Assistant Manager Nebahat Omeroglu Metro Istanbul General Manager Ozgur Soy, Metro Istanbul Deputy General Manager Fatih Gultekin, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and contractor company officials accompanied a group of 20 people with disabilities, including athletes and IMM staff. A post-trip evaluation meeting was held afterwards. The notes of the meeting will be turned into a booklet with the intention to be used an example for future projects.

MEASURE BY RECOMMENDATIONS
Head of IMM Rail Systems Department Pelin Alpkokin said that the technical trip to the metro line would be repeated for other lines as well. Alpkokin expressed the purpose of the organised trip with these words:
"Our goal is to see the sights through the eyes of our disabled citizens before we open our new lines and to take all the suggestions and warnings that they can tell us and do what is necessary in line with these suggestions. Therefore, we visited our two stations with our disabled citizens today. We listened to their suggestions."

USER EXPERIENCE
Indicating that metro line was built according to the disabled standards, IMM Metro AS General Manager Ozgur Soy drew attention to the user experience. General Manager Ozgur Soy said that the organised tour would prevent some difficulties before the opening of metro line.
"We wanted to organise this day so that citizens with disabilities can experience the metro line. If there are deficiencies in the eyes of the user, let us tell that we can complete those deficiencies without opening the line. "

NOTICES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED
IMM Accessibility Applications Consultant Adem Kuyumcu said, regarding the technical trip that “we have experienced how we can use the rail systems with the visually impaired, orthopedically disabled, hearing impaired and autistic individuals. We have reported any problems, if there are any. We wanted to take action immediately for a solution," he said. Berna Tulumcu, who is one of the participants of the technical trip between Kazim Karabekir and Kagithane stations, said, “When the door is opened, the front wheel of our chair can be attached due to the difference in elevation and they said they are going to fix this problem".
